Track Chain Type: Dry vs Lubricated

The purpose of track chains and track sets is to enable the efficient movement of tracked heavy machinery. These track chains and track sets consist of flexible links that are connected together by fittings called pins and bushings. These are types of track chain for heavy machinery: dry chains and lubricated chains. The difference between them is the amount of lubrication on the track pins and bushings, which affects the cost and the amount of wear on the tracks over time.

1. Lubricated chain

1

A lubricated chain is a type of track chain that has a lubricant permanently sealed in the gap between the pin and the bushing. These seals are designed to provide long-lasting lubrication and reduce the wear of the pin and bushing due to friction. Unlike dry chains, lubrication is automatic. However, the short-term cost of lubricating a chain is usually higher than that of a dry chain.

2. Dry chain

Dry chain, on the other hand, can be greased between the pin and bushing, but the seals on these chains are usually less durable and leak relatively quickly. Some dry chains may be sealed but not automatic. While dry chats are inexpensive, without sealing lubrication, they will wear out much more, and over time, replacement parts can be costly.
